Injuries to the Thigh / Hip

A. Contusion – also known as a bruise or “charley horse”

 

1. Pain at the site of direct trauma
2. Loss of function
3. Discoloration


B. Muscle Strain

 

1. Point tenderness at the site of trauma
2. Spasm around the injury site
3. Loss of function
4. Swelling within the muscle
5. Decreased range of motion


C. Bursitis

 

1. Pain on the outside of the hip
2. Pain may radiate down the outside of the leg
3. Point tenderness on the outside of the hip


D. Iliac Crest Contusion – also called a hip pointer

 

1. Direct trauma to the iliac crest (outside hip bone)
2. Point tenderness
3. Discoloration
4. Loss of function and range of motion within the hip
